What Is Packet Loss in Gaming and How to Reduce It?
Packet loss means some internet packets between your phone/PC and the game server get lost or arrive late. Unlike high ping, which only adds delay, packet loss makes the game feel like it stutters or your character teleports.
Common symptoms
- You suddenly walk into a wall or the ground
- You shoot but damage doesn't register
- Sound or animations cut in and out
- Disconnects even when ping isn't very high
Frequent causes in Iran
- Weak Wi-Fi or distance from the router
- Network congestion at peak hours
- Bad route to the game server (sometimes better DNS helps)
- Low-quality VPN
- Carrier outages or international route restrictions

How to reduce it
- Move closer to the router or use a cable.
- Stop devices downloading at the same time.
- Switch to gaming DNS: DNS guide.
- Turn off VPN and test again.
- If only one game has the problem, it's probably server/route side — see Playable?.
Is packet loss different from ping?
Yes. Ping = round-trip delay. Packet loss = lost data. Sometimes ping looks fine but packet loss is high; then the game feels "laggy" even when the ping number looks good.
